The MSK fellowship at the AIRP (American Institute for Radiologic Pathology) includes a combination of high volume sports medicine MR as well as the unique perspective of learning that imaging appearance of disease is based on the underlying pathology. Clinical work is performed at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda (2 to 3 days per week) which includes a high volume of sports medicine MR (fellows typically read nearly 1500 annually), as well as radiographs, CT and ultrasound Biopsy experience is highlighted at Washington Hospital Center (1 day per week) with an active MSK oncology practice. Conferences include 3 monthly conferences with Rheumatology colleagues and an arthroscopy correlation conference. Finally over 300 MSK cases are submitted to the AIRP and are reviewed annually with the fellow. These cases as well as consultation cases from throughout the US are reviewed with our pathology colleagues at 2-3 conferences per week. Fellows are expected to perform research and present their work at either the SSR and or the ARRS meetings. Overall the AIRP fellowship has been in existence since 1994 and is a well-rounded experience allowing transition to either private practice or academics with a unique exposure to the pathologic basis of MSK disease.

The clinical component is designed to build upon the skills learned during the fellow’s previous residency. The fellow will be trained in all modalities of musculoskeletal imaging, including radiography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI, and procedures will be performed under attending supervision. Close collaboration with multiple referring services including orthopedics, podiatry, sports medicine, rheumatology, infectious disease, and other fields in medicine.

This one-year musculoskeletal (MSK) fellowship encompasses all facets of MSK imaging, including spine, and interventional modalities. The fellowship features training in radiography, CT, MR, and ultrasound imaging interpretation of bone, joint, soft tissue, and spine pathology. Other: The Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery is ACGME accredited since 2009 and is the oldest musculoskeletal radiology fellowship program in the country, in existence since 1969. Over 100 Fellows have graduated from our program and can attest to the commitment to train future musculoskeletal radiologists. All of the radiology faculty are committed to education and are locally, nationally and internationally known and regularly participate in both intra- and inter-departmental conferences. They are consistently invited participants to present original research at formal forums and as visiting professors. The Chairman and the Chiefs of all the major modality divisions are recognized globally in the radiology, orthopaedic and rheumatologic communities for their innovative research, imaging expertise and their commitment to teaching. Hospital for Special Surgery is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic and rheumatologic conditions. Approximately 350,000 musculoskeletal imaging examinations are performed annually. There is a broad patient mix with referring physicians from sports medicine, arthroplasty, rheumatology, pediatrics and orthopaedic spine specialties. Jefferson Radiology is a 60+ physician subspecialty, group practice in Hartford, CT. Established in 1963; we provide services to 7 hospital systems in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and 10 outpatient centers. The hospital systems include Hartford Hospital, an 850 bed tertiary care facility and major teaching hospital in northern and central Connecticut, the Bone and Joint Institute, the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and 5 community hospitals. All the hospitals and outpatient centers are electronically connected. There is a freestanding radiology residency program at Hartford Hospital with approximately 20 residents and an active teaching program. There are ample opportunities to teach and work with residents. The MSK division comprises of 6 MSK subspecialty trained radiologists. The strong clinical and procedural training at Hopkins enables the fellows to become MSK radiologists who can thrive either in private practice or academic settings. Fellows are exposed to a large volume of diverse and multi-modality cases in sports medicine, rheumatology, musculoskeletal oncology, peripheral nerve imaging, and pediatric orthopedic surgery. In addition, fellows gain a strong experience in musculoskeletal procedures performed under ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT and MR guidance. Fellows perform joint aspirations, joint and peripheral nerve injections as well as soft tissue and bone biopsies. A robust interventional MR Service is in place. Trainees perform over 300 multi-modality MSK procedures during the year. An additional distinctive feature of the program is the close rapport between MSK radiology and the referring clinicians as the reading room is situated within the orthopedic surgery In addition to routine sports imaging cases, the MSK fellowship is also enriched by diverse mix of cases including kinematic 4D CT imaging, high resolution peripheral nerve imaging, advanced functional MR imaging for soft tissue and bone sarcomas and metal artifact reduction techniques (with MRI and CT).
The MSK section covers nearly the entire health system with a high volume of outpatient imaging at our 4 outpatient offices. Each of these offices contain the latest in CT, MR and US technology. There has been recent expansion with multiple new outpatient offices and associated significant increase in the volume of musculoskeletal imaging studies.

Rush University is offering an ACGME approved one year dedicated musculoskeletal imaging fellowship position starting July1, 2022. Rush is located in the heart of the Illinois Medical District, just west of downtown Chicago. The medical center is in a growth mode with current construction of a new outpatient facility that will house a new outpatient imaging center, cancer center and neurology clinic. The majority of the fellowship will be spent in the Midwest Orthopedics building, a state of the art facility. The musculoskeletal radiology section reads and manages six MRI scanners and a CT for Midwest Orthopedics as well as multiple MRI and CT scanners at Rush.
Rush University provides imaging and procedural services for Midwest Orthopedics, one of the top orthopedic groups in the country. The fellow will have daily access to a wide variety of musculoskeletal imaging ranging from sports medicine to bone tumor and sarcoma evaluation. We perform all imaging for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Fire, Joffrey Ballet Academy and multiple local collegiate sports programs.
We also interpret imaging for the medical center which provides a wide range of musculoskeletal imaging including rheumatology. The fellow will participate in multiple interdisciplinary conferences including weekly sarcoma conference, rheumatology conference and orthopedic sports medicine conferences. Dedicated time will be provided for a research project and to spend time with interventional radiology and neuroradiology sections for spine imaging and procedural exposure. All of our radiologists are actively involved in research projects with the Midwest Orthopedics department.
The musculoskeletal department consists of four dedicated board certified fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologists. The department is a very collegial group that values teaching, research and professional development. Other: The SUNY at Stony Brook Program (State University of New York) has an opening for one Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellow per year in our ACGME-accredited fellowship. The institution is a Level 1 Trauma Center and is part of the State University of New York, Stony Brook Campus. In addition to active involvement in procedural and technical aspects of musculoskeletal imaging, there is ample volume and exposure to trauma, sports, tumor, joint replacements, wrist/hand, elbow, knee, shoulder, hip, spine, sonography, pediatric imaging and rheumatology. The Fellow has dedicated protected time to pursue scholarly activities, research and particular areas of interest.
The department has 5 musculoskeletal radiologists with varied subspecialty and/or research interests in addition to 60 clinical faculty, 18 research faculty and 25 radiology residents. We perform in excess of 350,000 exams per year in our 624-bed teaching hospital. We have multiple satellite hospitals including Southampton Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital (now part of Stony Brook Medicine), contributing to increasing MSK caseloads.
The Fellow will be fully involved in clinical activities at our main University Hospital, as well as three outpatient imaging centers in and around the University Campus. Our Interventional Radiology faculties will initially supervise the Fellow for major procedures such as, but not limited to, kyphoplasty, imaging guided tumor biopsies, and bone/bone marrow biopsies. Other inpatient and outpatient MSK procedures such as joint aspiration, joint injections including arthrography, cyst/fluid aspiration, bursal injections, etc., will be primarily supervised dedicated MSK faculties. The Fellow will then gain increased degree of independence and responsibility for scheduling, performing, and following up of those procedures. Dedicated MSK ultrasound imaging is done at our outpatient imaging centers, and the Fellow may learn the skills for scanning and image interpretation with the guidance of MSK faculties and highly skilled ultrasound techs. Our new Cancer Center (MART building) was opened in 2019 and additional MR/CT scanners, brand-new IR suite, and dedicated reading room became available. Outpatient IR-suite is also currently under construction in one of our imaging centers.
The hospital has residencies and fellowships in many clinical services. As a major academic center within the school of medicine, the Fellow will interact with our full-time orthopedic surgery department as well as orthopedic residents, hand surgery fellows, PM& R residents, rheumatology fellows, emergency department and medical students and research faculty. In particular, the Fellow will closely work with Orthopedic residents for wet reads, consultations, procedure requests, and tumor board presentations/discussions. The Fellow will be the first point of contact for Technologists if they have any questions regarding protocolling the study of all modalities. There is an excellent variety of cases and pathology (mixture of rare pathologies for academic purposes and common bread-and-butter community medicine type pathologies for routine training), which is a major advantage of Stony Brook being the center of advanced medicine in the entire Suffolk County. Biostatistics services are available for research purposes.

Other: We offer diverse and broad experience in musculoskeletal imaging and interventions. Our section is responsible for all musculoskeletal imaging, including CT, MR, Ultrasound and Radiography performed at UAB-affiliated hospitals.
The fellows are involved in all aspects of MSK imaging and primarily responsible for performing the MSK procedures. We also have a busy MSK ultrasound service. Training does include spine imaging and intervention.
As the only Level One Trauma and MSK Oncology referral Center in Alabama, we offer an extensive experience in traumatic musculoskeletal injuries, tumor imaging and intervention as well as sports and rheumatological imaging. Education is a mainstay of our fellowship program with a weekly morning musculoskeletal radiology conference in which faculty, fellows, and residents participate.
Ours Fellows participate in musculoskeletal backup call (home pager call) along with the entire musculoskeletal faculty. Our fellows also participate in weekend day call, usually one half day every six weeks. There are opportunities for research, electives and internal and external moonlighting in the area.
In addition to the base PGY-6 salary, you will received up to 40K compensation for reading MSK radiographs independently. The current rates for internal moonlighting are 250-300/hour.
Requirements – 3 or more years in ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship (eligibility for full licensure to practice medicine in the state of Alabama), US citizenship or Green card. Unfortunately, UAB does not provide visa sponsorship.

The program provides experience in image-guided interventional orthopaedic procedures, including arthrography, joint aspiration, soft tissue and bone biopsy techniques and orthopaedic pain management procedures (fluoroscopic and ultrasound guided steroid and anesthetic injections). Experience is available in vertebroplasty. Advanced training is provided in interpretation of musculoskeletal radiography, CT and MRI. Elective time can be arranged for the MSK fellow to learn neuro and body MRI from fellowship trained experts in these subspecialties as well.
This one-year fellowship is primarily supervised by two fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologists (Farzad Rezai MD and Andrew Chang MD) who are known for their teaching excellence. Musculoskeletal Radiology fellowships at the University of California Irvine are at the level of Health Sciences Clinical Instructor, and one position is based at Long Beach Veterans Administration. This position will have the benefits and privileges through the University of California, Irvine. Each month, eight UC Irvine Radiology residents rotate through the Tibor Rubin Long Beach VA Medical Center. The fellows will participate in the teaching of UC Irvine residents and medical students, actively participate in interdisciplinary conferences, and take an active part in the ongoing research projects and publications.

The fellowship is of one year duration and four fellows are selected each year. There is a close relationship between the MSK section and referring orthopedists and rheumatologists. The fellowship includes rotations through the UCSF Parnassus campus and the UCSF Orthopedic Institute at Mission Bay, which has a large Sports Medicine Clinic. The fellowship includes a significant volume of joint MRIs, outpatient and inpatient musculoskeletal imaging, as well as spine, pediatric musculoskeletal imaging, rheumatology, and bone tumors. Additionally, a significant volume of musculoskeletal interventions are performed by the fellows, including joint arthrography, steroid injections, bone biopsies, radiofrequency ablations of osteoid osteomas, and various ultrasound-guided procedures. Diagnostic and procedural musculoskeletal ultrasound is also offered. Conferences include sports medicine, tumor board, rheumatology, journal club, morbidity and mortality, and metabolic. The Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship at the University of Chicago Medical Center is a one-year non-accredited clinical training program constituting a closely supervised experience in the application and interpretation of imaging examinations and procedures as they relate to the analysis of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, and soft tissues. One position is offered per year. The Musculoskeletal Radiology Section offers state-of-the-art multimodality imaging and image-guided interventional procedures for the patients of the University of Chicago Medical Center. The busy Orthopaedic Oncology Service has long been an example of a team-approach to patient care, and the Musculoskeletal Radiology Section provides comprehensive services as part of the University of Chicago Musculoskeletal Oncology Group, including CT and US guided bone/soft tissue biopsies, as well as radiofrequency ablation procedures. The radiologists also work closely with the Section of Sports Medicine to offer imaging services including to elite athletes, such as professional basketball players and college athletes. The section also works closely with the Section of Rheumatology to diagnose complex disorders of joints. The Musculoskeletal Radiology reading rooms are located on the 4th floor of the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (“DCAM”) at the University of Chicago Medical Center. A team of dedicated orthopaedic radiology technologists are located adjacent to the reading rooms, and provide services for the orthopaedic surgery and rheumatology clinics. We also interpret radiographs as well as CT and MRI examinations obtained on the first floor of the DCAM (outpatients) in Mitchell Hospital (inpatients and emergency room patients), and in the Center for Care and Discovery (“CCD” - inpatients). Joint injections and aspirations are generally performed in the fluoroscopy suite in DCAM 1C. Diagnostic ultrasound examinations, as well as US/CT-guided biopsies and radiofrequency ablation procedures, are performed in Mitchell Hospital and CCD. Ample opportunities are provided for both clinical and basic science research via Department of Radiology Research Centers and Programs. The section participates in multi-disciplinary conferences throughout the week including Sports Medicine, Rheumatology, Orthopedic Oncology and Pediatric Rheumatology conferences.

Fellows interpret a broad range of cross sectional imaging studies and perform a wide variety of imaging guided invasive procedures. Clinical research opportunities are available but not required. Fellows are post-doctoral associates rather than occupying ACGME positions, and therefore there are opportunities for internal moonlighting to maintain general radiology skills. Responsibilities include independent radiograph interpretation and after hours resident supervision, but there is additional compensation for these duties. Candidates must have an MD or DO degree (the employer accepts foreign educational equivalent) and obtain a Florida medical license prior to employment.

University of Florida has busy Orthopaedic Oncology and Sports Medicine Services. It is a Level I Trauma Center. Other: Our expanding hospital system, including 2 hospitals, 2 outpatient imaging centers and a stand-alone urgent care center include state of the art equipment in all modalities. In addition to our ample volume which allows the fellow access to extensive studies, we benefit from a robust level 1 trauma center and very diverse and unusual pathology. Daily MSK procedures allow fellows to become proficient and gain independence performing procedures. Fellows will also gain experience in pediatric MSK as this is covered by MSK faculty. The University of Kansas Heath System has an unexpected one-year Non-ACGME Musculoskeletal fellowship opening for the 2024-2025 academic year. This fellowship will place emphasis on developing expertise and advanced training in MSK Radiology. The position is fully funded, with benefit, and will provide excellent advanced training for entry into competitive private practice or academic radiology positions. High end sports imaging (KC Chiefs/Royals), a high volume orthopedic practice and busy rheumatology service, provide diverse training. A diagnostic radiology residency certificate from an ACGME accredited program is required. No evenings or weekends and no home or pager call. The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) delivers comprehensive health care services through a network of 13 affiliated hospitals. MSK Fellows provide clinical care for several UMMS hospitals, associated imaging centers and the Baltimore VA Medical Center. MSK radiology fellowship training is based at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the flagship academic medical center of UMMS. UMMC is located in downtown Baltimore on the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore, a short walking distance from Baltimore’s historic Inner Harbor and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. MSK fellows at UMMC receive a well-rounded education with training in trauma (home of the world renowned R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center), sports medicine (strong UM Orthopaedic department and team physicians for the Big Ten Conference UM Terrapins college sports teams), cancer (top tier cancer center: UM Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center), rheumatology, and bread-and-butter inpatient and outpatient MSK radiology for adults and children. MSK fellows participate in image-guided biopsy and tumor board, in support of UMMC’s dedicated orthopaedic oncology service. MSK fellows also receive training in image-guided diagnostic/therapeutic joint procedures and diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound. Primary diagnostic imaging modalities include state-of-the-art MRI (3.0 T and 1.5 T), CT (includes spectral), x-ray, and fluoroscopy, with additional exposure to PET/MRI, PET/CT, and bone densitometry (DXA). Graduates of our MSK radiology fellowship program are well prepared for careers in private practice, academic radiology or federal service (VA medical centers, etc.).

Multidisciplinary conferences. Research opportunities abound. The Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship at the University of Miami offers training in diagnostic radiography, MRI, CT and ultrasound. Fellows are exposed to multimodality cases in sports medicine, rheumatology, peripheral nerve imaging, trauma, and musculoskeletal oncology. Procedures include CT, MRI, ultrasound guided interventional and diagnostic procedures including joint aspirations, joint injections, arthrography, and soft tissue and bone tumor biopsies. The service has an active Sports Medicine component with close interaction with both major league and college athletics. The University is an active tertiary referral center for soft tissue and bone tumors in the South Florida area. There is close daily interaction with the Orthopedic Department and ample opportunities for research and publication. There are multiple 1.5 T and 3.0T MR Scanners on campus and at outpatient clinics across South Florida. The University of Miami is affiliated with Jackson Memorial Hospital, a 1,550 bed major teaching hospital with an active trauma service. The Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology at the University of Virginia offers a high volume clinical practice through which our fellows see a wide range of pathology. Fellow education is a constant emphasis among the faculty, yet the fellowship also provides ample opportunity for fellow independence. We run an exceptionally busy interventional service which gives fellow extensive hands on experience, with up to 35 interventional musculoskeletal procedures scheduled daily across multiple sites. Our fellows get extensive spine radiology exposure, both with cross sectional imaging as well as through interventions including epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, and facet injections. Our trainees leave with confidence in interpreting pediatric, oncologic, and rheumatologic MSK imaging in addition to "bread and butter" sports medicine imaging. As a large fellowship, we have an extensive fellow network throughout the country which can be a great aid when searching for post fellowship jobs, particularly through the South and East Coast. One of our fellowship positions is an MSK/informatics hybrid spot where fellows spend 20% of their effort on informatics work. Research track positions are also potentially available for interested candidates. A recently introduced, unique aspect of our fellowship is that our fellows spend a week at a time performing overnight general radiology final reads on ED patients, with subspecialist back-up. This "24/7" coverage internal moonlighting program both helps our fellow maintain general radiology skills during fellowship year, as well as results in a salary that is approximately double the base PGY-scaled salary for the fellowship.

We are a highly regarded hospital system in Richmond, the capital city of Virginia. The VCU Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention fellowship is a one-year program. Fellows are predominantly based in a brand new state-of-the-art Orthopedic Imaging outpatient center in the vibrant Short Pump area, a suburb just outside of Richmond. Fellows also rotate at our other outpatient center (Stony Point) and at our main VCU medical center.
We have 6 musculoskeletal trained faculty and are still expanding. Fellows in our program will become experts at all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging, including spine imaging, and at performing MSK procedures (CT and US guided biopsies, joint injections/aspirations, epidural steroid injection, facet injections). We have a high daily volume of MSK CT, MRI and US. Our department includes friendly and expertly trained support staff to assist with all interventional procedures. The MSK section works closely with VCU's large and highly rated Orthopedic department, as well as the Rheumatology and PMR departments. Our fellows focus on cross-sectional imaging. Optional in-house MSK moonlighting opportunities have allowed recent fellows to more than double their base salary. Elective time is available (e.g. nuclear medicine, emergency, pediatric, chest, breast, neuro or abdominal imaging)
