International Skeletal Society (ISS) Intersociety Award
Revision Date: November 19, 2025
Purpose:
This policy governs the selection and administration of the ISS Intersociety Award at the SSR Annual Meeting.
Policy:
The Program and Executive Committees will select the podium abstract presentation which best exemplifies a unique or novel message in musculoskeletal imaging. All members of the SSR, including members-in-training (MITs), are eligible for award consideration; however, special consideration may be given to recognizing an SSR member who may become a future ISS member, but who would not otherwise have an opportunity to attend the ISS Member’s Meeting Scientific Sessions. The lead author will indicate eligibility for award consideration at the time of abstract submission.
The winning abstract will be recommended by the Program Committee, and then submitted to the Executive Committee following the conclusion of the Society’s annual scientific meeting. The SSR association management company (Veritas) will notify the author(s) and the ISS of the award-winning abstract upon final approval, which will be determined no later than the first SSR Executive Committee meeting following the SSR Annual Meeting. This award may be presented to an abstract which is also the recipient of other awards, such as the Young Investigator Travel Award (YITA). The lead author is responsible for submitting the award-winning abstract according to the terms established by the ISS.
The SSR and ISS will honor a reciprocal agreement whereby the traveling presenter may attend the scientific meeting of the reciprocal society (even if not a member), and receives complimentary meeting registration.
The ISS award is accompanied by a travel stipend as specified by the SSR Executive Committee and noted in the award notification letter. The current stipend for travel within North America is up to $1500, and up to $2500 for international travel; the stipend is not to exceed the recipient’s total reimbursable travel expenses. Attendance at the ISS meeting and presentation of the award-winning abstract are required for receipt of the travel stipend. Requests for travel expense reimbursement must be submitted in accordance with the SSR Travel Expense Reimbursement Policy, no later than 60 days following completion of travel.
The award can be applied to the ISS meeting in the same year, or 1 year following, the award year (e.g., 2026 winner can apply the travel stipend to the 2026 or 2027 ISS meeting). Publication of the award-winning abstract prior to presentation at the ISS meeting does not preclude eligibility or receipt of the award.
The award recipient will be recognized at the subsequent SSR annual scientific meeting, and presented with an award certificate.
