The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Fellowship at UNC Health is designed to provide exceptional subspecialty training that prepares fellows equally well for careers in both academic and private practice musculoskeletal radiology. The program emphasizes not only diagnostic excellence but also strong communication skills and collaborative relationships with radiology colleagues, referring clinicians, and imaging technologists. Fellows are expected to demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and a strong work ethic in all interactions within the UNC healthcare system.
Fellows gain extensive experience interpreting musculoskeletal MRI and CT studies, reviewing cases directly with attending radiologists during cross-sectional imaging shifts. In keeping with a model of graded independence, fellows initially review radiographs with supervision and progressively transition to independent interpretation of plain films as the year advances. Procedural training is a key component, with fellows performing a broad range of interventions and actively participating in daily biopsy review conferences, where they present and discuss cases with the division.
Education remains a central focus of the fellowship. Fellows attend dedicated teaching conferences led by faculty and contribute to multidisciplinary conferences, eventually taking on presentation roles. All clinical and educational activities take place at the main campus of UNC Hospitals, offering a comprehensive and collaborative training environment. Interested applicants should submit required materials to the Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship Coordinator, Virginia Carver, [email protected] who is also available to assist with application-related inquiries.
