The Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship at the University of Chicago Medical Center is a one-year non-accredited clinical training program constituting a closely supervised experience in the application and interpretation of imaging examinations and procedures as they relate to the analysis of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, and soft tissues. One position is offered per year. The Musculoskeletal Radiology Section offers state-of-the-art multimodality imaging and image-guided interventional procedures for the patients of the University of Chicago Medical Center. The busy Orthopaedic Oncology Service has long been an example of a team-approach to patient care, and the Musculoskeletal Radiology Section provides comprehensive services as part of the University of Chicago Musculoskeletal Oncology Group, including imaging-guided tumor biopsies and radiofrequency ablation procedures. The radiologists also work closely with the Section of Sports Medicine to offer services to all athletes, as well as the Section of Rheumatology to diagnose complex disorders of joints. The Musculoskeletal Radiology reading rooms are located on the 4th floor of the Duchosoiss Center for Advanced Medicine (“DCAM”). A team of dedicated orthopaedic radiology technologists are located adjacent to the reading rooms, and provide services for the orthopaedic surgery and rheumatology clinics. We also interpret radiographs as well as CT and MRI examinations obtained on the first floor of the DCAM (outpatients) in Mitchell Hospital (inpatients and emergency room patients), and in the Center for Care and Discovery (“CCD” - inpatients). Joint injections and aspirations are generally performed in the fluoroscopy suite in DCAM 1C. Ultrasound examinations, as well as CT-guided biopsies and radiofrequency ablation procedures, are performed in Mitchell Hospital and CCD.

The Musculoskeletal Radiology Division at UTSW provides comprehensive training to the fellows in diagnostic and interventional services. Our goal is to provide fellows with the knowledge and skill that they will need to provide patients with safe, effective and innovative care. The fellowship is designed to encourage and engage fellows who are innovating and leading the way to advance the MSK Imaging field. The fellows will have the opportunity to benefit from the unique career development and mentoring opportunities available at UT Southwestern.

Fellows run the service on a day to day basis and form an integral part of the Musculoskeletal Imaging and intervention team. Fellows protocol all the MRI and arthrogram examinations to be performed on high-end 1.5T and 3T scanners throughout the campus. Attendance at many multi-disciplinary conferences enhances knowledge and provides valuable communication skills allowing them to become progressively independent throughout the year.

Our Fellows get an opportunity to perform a variety of procedures ranging from routine joint injections to radiofrequency modulation of pain pathways. We work very closely with orthopedic oncology, rheumatology, sports and various sub-specialists in providing care to patients who need biopsies of musculoskeletal tumors and image guided interventions for pain syndromes.

A professional budget is provided for educational expenses. Attendance at national conferences with presentations is highly encouraged. In addition, fellows use their protected time to advance their education and have the opportunity and support to be able to participate in various research projects or design new research studies from the ground up.

Fellow specific lectures are provided with a focus on patient work-up and follow-up. A high case volume provides ample "hands-on and at site" teaching time. UT Southwestern is an educationally driven institution with numerous interdisciplinary conferences. Our weekly conferences include Texas Bone Club, Sarcoma Tumor Board, Divisional Case Conferences and M&M and the Ortho Chiefs Conference. On a monthly basis, we have Hand & Foot Conferences, Sports and Joint Conference, Arthroscopy Correlation Conference as well as the Rheumatology Grand Rounds.
